Carla Simon’s Berlinale Winner “Alcarràs” Named as Spain’s Oscar Pick

"Alcarràs"

This year’s recipient of the Berlinale’s highest honor may be heading to the Oscars. Spain has selected Golden Bear winner “Alcarràs” as its pick for the international feature category at the 2023 Oscars. Screen Daily confirmed the news.

Directed and co-written by Carla Simón, “Alcarràs” is set in a Catalan village and tells the story of a family of peach farmers who face an uncertain future when the new owner of the land they work on decides to sell it.

Simon made her feature debut with 2017’s “Summer, 1993,” a coming-of-age story about a girl who moves in with extended family following her mother’s death.

The Oscars are slated to take place March 12. Austria recently submitted Marie Kreutzer’s “Corsage,” a drama about Empress Elisabeth of Austria, for consideration in the international feature category.
