Departures axed so ‘necessary repairs’ can be made to vessel

NCL cancels two Norwegian Sun sailings after ship hit iceberg

Norwegian Cruise Line has cancelled two Norwegian Sun sailings after the ship struck a small iceberg while on an Alaska cruise.

The two sailings, due to depart on June 30 and July 5, were cancelled so repairs could be made to the ship, which was sailing to the Hubbard Glacier when it hit the ‘growler’ – an iceberg that has less than 3.3ft showing above the water line.

US media outlets reported that the vessel was sailing in intense fog with limited visibility at the time of the collision.

A spokesperson for NCL said: “On June 25, while transiting to Hubbard Glacier in Alaska, Norwegian Sun made contact with ice.

“The ship sailed to Juneau, Alaska for further assessment where it was decided that the current voyage would be shortened and the cruise scheduled to embark on June 30 would be cancelled so that the necessary repairs can be made.

“As a precautionary measure, we have also cancelled the voyage scheduled to embark on July 5.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and are communicating with all impacted guests directly.”
