Reddit Launches Updated Profiles, More Controls Over Activity Info

Now you can choose to display your in-app activity on your profile.

Reddit Launches Updated Profiles, More Controls Over Activity Info

Reddit has announced some new updates to user profiles in the app, including an updated profile presentation format, to provide more context to visitors, and new controls over what of your Reddit activity is visible via your profile listing.

First off, Reddit’s rolling out updated user profiles, with an updated activity summary, including post counts, and subreddit engagement.

As you can see in this example, the new Reddit profile will give viewers easier access to a listing of your in-app activity, as well as other social platform links, karma points, and more.

Reddit’s also updated the “Active in” display of subreddit activity, which will help show users more info about the discussions that each user is a part of.

Though you might also not want people to see every community that you’ve visited, so Reddit’s also added some new control options, so you can choose what’s shown, and what’s not, within these listings.

As shown in this sequence, via the “Curate Your Profile” menu, you can now choose to restrict certain info on your profile display, while you can also choose your activity within specific subreddits to keep hidden from visitor view.

So if you’re regularly engaging in r/dankmemes, you can now keep that to yourself, and avoid any imperial entanglements.

The only proviso on this is that moderators will still be able to see your full activity in the app, regardless of these settings, in order to assist in their assessments of your posts and memberships.

As per Reddit:

“If you post, comment, send modmail, request to be an approved poster, or request to join a private subreddit, that mod team will have access to your full profile content history for 28 days after the interaction – regardless of your settings.”

Your chosen restrictions will revert back after this period, but essentially, Reddit’s giving mods full access to your contributions in the app, in order to help them make an accurate assessment of your suitability in varying context.

So, more ways for people to connect, based on the communities that you engage with, and options to limit what’s displayed on your profile, if you want to keep some of that a secret.

I mean, the moderator access thing could be a concern in some context, given that mods are not employees of Reddit. But a small group of mods run the majority of subreddits either way, so Reddit’s obviously comfortable enabling this additional transparency.
