Report: Uber to List NYC Taxis on Its App

After vowing to "disrupt" the traditional taxi business, Uber soon will list New York City taxis on its app after reaching an agreement with two app providers that the city's roughly 14,000 taxis use, according to The Wall Street Journal. 

The New York City Taxi & Limousine Commission's licensed technology partners—Creative Mobile Technologies and Curb Mobility—will integrate their taxi-hailing app software with Uber's, according to the report. The taxi option is expected to become available later this spring. 

Passengers will pay about the same for a taxi ride as for an Uber X ride, according to the report. New York taxi drivers, unlike Uber drivers, before accepting a trip will see their projected earnings because they will be paid according to New York's ride-hail wage standards, according to the report.

In a February investor day presentation, Uber noted that it wanted to get "every taxi" listed on Uber by 2025. At that time, Uber Taxi was live in 27 countries and in 2021 added 122,000 new taxi drivers, a four-times year-over-year increase, according to the company.

The day before the WSJ report, the New York TLC extended its moratorium on new for-hire vehicle licenses for another six months, except for those vehicles that are wheelchair-accessible. The TLC cited traffic congestion, vehicle supply, passenger demand, driver earnings and attrition rates as factors in its decision.

Uber did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
