Disappointed by the absence of “The Woman King” at this year’s Academy Awards? Us too. We are pleased to see Gina Prince-Bythewood’s latest leading in nominations at the second annual Girls on Film Awards, which is slated to take place February 23. The awards “reflect the ethos of the Girls On Film podcast” and “reward excellence in female-focused films,” per a press release announcing the noms.
Directed by Prince-Bythewood and written by Dana Stevens, “The Woman King” stars Viola Davis and is based on a true story of an all-female army that protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey.
The film is up for honors such as Best Feature, Best Female Friendship On Screen, and Best Ensemble Acting.
Other titles up for multiple awards include “Aftersun,” Charlotte Wells’ portrait of a pre-teen girl’s vacation with her single father, and “She Said,” Maria Schrader’s tribute to the Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times journalists who helped break the Harvey Weinstein story.
