Moss in "The Handmaid's Tale": George Kraychyk/HuluElisabeth Moss is set to add to her ever-busy slate with a new limited series for FX on Hulu. The “The Handmaid’s Tale” star will topline thriller “The Veil.” According to Deadline, Denise Di Novi (“Heathers”) and former CBS Entertainment chairwoman Nina Tassler will join Moss as exec producers.
The source details that the series will explore “the surprising and fraught relationship between two women who play a deadly game of truth and lies on the road from Istanbul to Paris and London. One woman has a secret, the other a mission to reveal it before thousands of lives are lost.” No word yet on who will star opposite Moss.
Said writer and EP Steven Knight, “I’m absolutely thrilled to be telling this story, which is truly international and very contemporary. We have gathered together some of the most talented people in the business. Working with Denise Di Novi is always a pleasure and I’ve wanted to work with Elisabeth Moss for a long time. … I think this will be a landmark television event.”
Besides “The Handmaid’s Tale” — for which she won two Emmy awards including Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series — Moss’ most recent credits have included Josephine Decker’s Shirley Jackson biopic “Shirley” and Apple TV+ series “Shining Girls.”
Elsewhere in TV news, Deadline has also exclusively revealed that a historical comedy series about short-lived British monarch Lady Jane Grey has been greenlit at Amazon, with Emily Bader (“Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin”) set to star as the young Tudor. Gemma Burgess (author of the “Brooklyn Girls” trilogy) and Meredith Glynn (“The Boys”) will be co-showrunners and co-exec producers on the show, which is based on the “The Lady Janies” series of YA historical novels penned by Brodi Ashton, Cynthia Hand, and Jodi Meadows.
Jamie Babbit (“But I’m A Cheerleader”) is signed on to direct the pilot and will serve as producing director.
The series will follow Jane, who “dreads her arranged marriage, only to be surprised when it results in a steamy romance, her being crowned Queen, and a heroic mission to save the magical people persecuted by her political rivals.”
Bader also counts the “Charmed” reboot among her credits, and is attached to star in Jennifer Esposito’s crime drama “Fresh Kills.”
With directing credits on “Russian Doll,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and the upcoming “A League of Their Own” series, Babbit most recently earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series for “Only Murders in the Building.”
