Jane Campion, "The Power of the Dog's" history-making writer, director, and producerNetflix has released a conversation with some of the women behind “The Power of the Dog” in honor of International Women’s Day. Moderated by Tamara Jenkins, a filmmaker whose credits include “Private Life” and “The Savages,” the wide-ranging discussion features writer-director Jane Campion, producer Tanya Seghatchian, actress Kirsten Dunst, and cinematographer Ari Wegner. All four of the participants are up for Oscars for their work on the Western psychodrama. Campion is making history as the first woman to be nominated for Best Director twice. She previously received a nod for “The Piano,” and took home the honor for Best Original Screenplay for the Holly Hunter-starrer.
Based on Thomas Savage’s novel of the same name, the drama is set on a rural Montana ranch and tells the story of two brothers, one of whom marries a local widow with a teenage son.
While discussing the character of Rose, Dunst admits that she didn’t “rely on the book” for insight. Campion concedes that Rose is “a bit underwritten” in Savage’s novel. She explains, “I think she was looked at from the outside.”
