What's New on Hulu in April 2022

Hulu’s love affair with true crime isn’t slowing down in April. In the wake of the success of The Dropout (series finale April 7), which focused on Elizabeth Holmes and the Theranos scandal, the streamer will premiere Under the Banner of Heaven (April 28), a docu-drama starring Andrew Garfield and based on Jon Krakauer’s award-winning book about the abuses committed within and by members of a fundamentalist sect of Mormonism.

And speaking of true crime, Hulu will try to have its cake and eat it, too, with Captive Audience (April 21), a documentary series that explores the fallout from an infamous example of the genre. In the early 1970s, a 7-year-old boy named Steven Stayner was kidnapped and brainwashed by a pedophile and didn’t escape for seven years. His return to his family garnered national media coverage and changed laws regarding the statute of limitations for sex crimes against children—but it also provided fodder for a 1989 TV movie of the week that premiered just months before Stayner would be killed in a motorcycle accident. Captive Audience explores the devastating impact of both the crime and the public attention on the victim’s surviving family members, including his two children, who grew up never knowing their dad.
