10 Things You Can Declutter in the Next 10 Minutes
There is a feeling you get after decluttering that is hard to describe until you’ve experienced it. A little bit of relief… a little bit of pride. A kind of satisfaction that says, I did something good for myself today. ...
There is a feeling you get after decluttering that is hard to describe until you’ve experienced it. A little bit of relief… a little bit of pride.
A kind of satisfaction that says, I did something good for myself today.
Studies show that decluttering reduces anxiety, sharpens focus, and gives you a real boost in mood and self-confidence.
And even though you can’t declutter your entire home in ten minutes, you can still experience some of those benefits. Not because your home is suddenly perfect, but because you took control of something and that feeling carries.
Most people think decluttering has to be a project. A Saturday. A complete overhaul. And because it can’t be all of those things right now, they do nothing.
But even ten minutes can make a difference. A real one. Especially if you’re focused. Pick one of these, set a timer, and see.
1. A Few Decorations from Your Shelves
Walk up to any shelf and look at it honestly. There’s probably something there you don’t love anymore—kept out of habit, or because it just landed there and never left. What remains will have room to breathe, and so will you.
2. The Expired Items in Your Medicine Cabinet
Open the cabinet and pull out everything past its expiration date. Most people are holding onto a small pharmacy of things that are completely useless. Dispose of them properly, wipe down the shelf, and enjoy a cabinet that finally makes sense.
3. The Linens You No Longer Use
Get rid of the linens and towels you never use. We accumulate them for years without ever removing the old ones. Pull the worn, the mismatched, the forgotten. Most animal shelters are glad to take old towels.
4. A Handful of Things from Your Junk Drawer
You don’t have to solve the junk drawer today. Just open it and spend ten minutes pulling out the obvious: dead batteries, dried-up pens, keys that fit nothing you own. Even that small effort will make it easier to close and easier to live with.
5. Your Food Storage Containers
Pull them all out, match what you can, and let go of everything that is warped, stained, or lidless. A functional set you actually reach for is worth far more than a stuffed cabinet of mismatched pieces.
6. Your Bathroom Counter
Clear it completely. Wipe it down. Then only put back what you use every single day. What you use a few times a week goes in a drawer. A clear counter is one of the fastest ways to make your home feel like a place you want to be.
7. Your Phone’s Home Screen
The apps you never open are clutter too. Spend ten minutes removing what you don’t use.
8. Your Car
Take a bag out with you and spend ten minutes clearing it out. Starting your morning in a clean car changes the tone of your day more than you’d expect.
9. Books You’ll Never Read Again
Books are meant to be read, as Joshua Becker says. If you have some you don’t intend to read again, pass them on to someone who will.
10. One Bag of Clothes from Your Closet
You don’t need to do the whole closet. Just fill one bag with clothes you haven’t worn in the past year. This step—depending how quickly you make decisions—may make a noticeable impact. But even if it doesn’t, it’s still movement in the right direction.
None of these will change everything on their own. But each one is a step toward a home that feels more like you—and a life that has a little more room in it. Ten minutes might not be enough finish. But it is enough to start!
