30 Things to Do in September to Kick off Cozy Season

Fall is easily my favorite time of year. By the time I’m flipping the calendar over to a new month, everything feels awash with cozy inspiration and the desire to gather with those you love. It’s the perfect time of year to dive into your reading list and set a strong tempo for the rest of 2024 (after all, there are only a few months left of the year!). If you’re looking for things to do in September, trust me: you’ve come to the right place.

30 Things to Do in September to Stay Inspired This Month

I’ve been brainstorming my September bucket list for a while, and though I’ve let go of the pressure to make all of this happen in the span of 30 days, it’s a wonderful starting point to keep me inspired all throughout the month. Below, I’m sharing the books our editors are reading, the recipes we’re cooking, and all the intentions we’re bringing to the month ahead. Keep scrolling and get excited about fall—it might just be your best season yet.

September 1-7

1. Prep Labor Day classics. The best part about Labor Day? (Besides being OOO?) The food, of course! Steal our Labor Day party guide—complete with the most refreshing frosé recipe.

2. Celebrate the unofficial last day of summer. Lounge on the lake, hang out at a BBQ, or just enjoy your own company. (Personally, I love giving my house a good deep clean.) Do whatever makes you feel best—this is your day off!

3. Make your inbox glow. One of the best ways I’ve found to combat email anxiety is to infuse my inbox with a little more joy. Check out our list of the best newsletters to subscribe to for a little more happiness on the reg. Who knows, you might even look forward to your email power hour.

4. Switch up your lunchtime routine. Get inspired with these intentional lunch break ideas for an *actual* reset. Oh, and if you’re looking for something new to munch on midday, Camille’s new favorite salmon recipe is it.

5. Start one of the best fall books. We’re spilling on all the best new reads of the season. From memoirs to romance novels to page-turning thrillers—fall 2024 books have so much in store.

6. Join (or start!) a supper club. As someone who loves to eat and socialize, a supper club is one of the perfect ways to chat over your favorite dishes. Learn everything about starting your own supper club.

7. Visit a flower market. Trust me, there are plenty of blooms to find in the fall. It’s one of the most inspiring things to do in September! Alternative: Stop by your local Trader Joe’s and browse the blooms—the grocer stocks an endless array of floral options.

8. Learn to knit. While knitting is a year-round delight, it’s also one of my favorite things to do in September with reckless in abandon. YouTube videos are in abundance or you can visit your local knitting store and take a peek at their class schedule (many offer in-person and virtual options).

9. Pick up a new fall candle. Is there anything better than breaking out a new candle that epitomizes fall? While I’m all about pumpkin spice, there are so many other autumnal scents to choose from. Shop our recommendations for the best fall candles.

10. Plan a wardrobe refresh. Transition your closet with cozy knits, boots, and autumnal colors. (Maybe do a closet clean-out while you’re at it?)

11. Try a new fall recipe. Experiment with making homemade pumpkin bread, spiced lattes, or butternut squash risotto. Now’s the time to break out all your coziest recipes.

12. Commence your annual Gilmore Girls rewatch. While the show takes place during all times of the year, there’s something quintessentially fall about the New England backdrop, small-town vibes, and general coziness and comfort of it all.

13. Try new parenting strategies. Back-to-school season is full of excitement—there’s so much newness all around us and it feels like a natural fresh start for all the fall fun. But it’s one of the busiest times of the year as well. Try these parenting hacks to streamline your family life.

14. Host a fall-themed dinner party. Invite friends over for a seasonal feast with pumpkin soup, roasted veggies, and apple cider. Hosting for the first time? These dinner party tips ensure a seamless evening.

15. Have a picnic in the park. Enjoy the crisp air and changing leaves with a cozy blanket and a basket of your favorite snacks. Don’t forget the hot cider!

16. Start a gratitude journal. Reflect daily on what you’re thankful for as the season of gratitude approaches. Not into journaling? Try saying these positive affirmations in the mirror when you wake up.

17. Decorate your home for fall. Add cozy touches like candles, throw blankets, and autumn wreaths to your space. Get more inspiration for making the home summer-to-fall refresh.

18. Watch a classic fall movie. Settle in with a cozy blanket and watch an autumn favorite like When Harry Met Sally or Love Story. We shared all the best fall movies to snuggle up with.

19. Go on a sunrise or sunset walk. Sometimes, a little fresh air is all you need. Go with a friend, your partner, or with just yourself for company. Leave your phone at home and be present for the changing leaves and crisp air.

20. Create a cozy reading nook. Is there anything better than curling up in a comfy corner with a blanket and a book? Pile on the pillows, make sure the lighting is just right, and carve out space to rest a mug.

21. Go apple picking. Spend a day at an orchard and bring home a bushel to make homemade apple treats. Pie or crumble, anyone?

22. Explore a cute small town. Whether you live in the Northeast or not, I guarantee there’s an adorable, from-another-time town waiting for you to visit. Pull out a map, pack a lunch, and get ready for a road trip.

23. Try a new workout routine. Start a fitness challenge, like yoga, pilates, or outdoor running, to stay active as the weather cools. Rather work out indoors? Join a gym or studio—bonus points if you sign up with a friend.

24. Try a new craft project. Create DIY fall decor like a wreath, painted pumpkins, or a garland of autumn leaves.

25. Create a fall playlist. Fall is about creating a cozy, quiet atmosphere. I love playing Gregory Alan IsakovJosé Gonzalez, or Fleet Foxes to set the perfect tone.

26. Switch up your morning routine. With the changing season and cooler mornings, that AM workout might become less intuitive. Instead, lean into what your body and mind are craving. Try journaling or reading in bed after waking up, sipping on hot tea, and making pumpkin oats for breakfast. Remember: Your body’s needs shift throughout the year—stay open and listen to what it’s telling you.

27. Make a fall Pinterest board. This is my favorite way to spend a few hours. Pour a mug of something warm, light your aforementioned fall candle, and get to pinning! Gather inspiring quotes, outfit ideas, and images and videos of how you’d like your home to feel this fall.

28. Invite friends over for a potluck. I’d argue that the most casual gatherings are often the most fun. Light the tea lights, put on your fall playlist, and arrange a simple bouquet. Have everyone bring their favorite fall dish for the various courses and celebrate the season together.

29. Go to a football game. Get into the fall spirit by supporting your local team, whether at a high school, college, or professional game.

30. Schedule coffee dates. Make a list of coffee shops and cafes you’ve dying to visit in your city. Send out a few texts and get some catch-ups on your calendar.
