“Abbott Elementary,” Quinta Brunson’s tribute to overworked and underfunded public school teachers, has been renewed for a second season by ABC. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news.
Inspired by Brunson’s mother, a retired teacher, the mockumentary-style workplace comedy takes place at a West Philadelphia elementary school. In addition to creating Abbott Elementary, Brunson exec produces the series and stars as Janine Teagues, a second grade teacher determined to enrich her students’ lives despite a lack of support from school admin, supplies, and decent compensation. When we’re introduced to Janine, she’s one year into the job and hasn’t let the overwhelming odds she’s facing or the daily humiliations she’s subjected to dampen her optimism.
“Abbott Elementary” is “tied with CBS’ already-renewed ‘Ghosts’ as broadcast’s No. 1 comedy among the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic,” per THR. It also boasts a 100 percent Fresh rating among critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
“A Black Lady Sketch Show,” “Miracle Workers,” and “Quinta vs. Everything” are among Brunson’s other credits.
