Cate Blanchett is set to make history at the Goya Awards. A press release announced that the two-time Oscar winner will receive the inaugural International Goya Award from the Spanish Film Academy. The award honors artists who “have contributed to cinema as a medium that brings together different cultures and people,” and was created “to celebrate worldwide artists of cinema.” The release describes Blanchett as an “extraordinary figure of global cinema and an actress of unforgettable characters, which are part of our memory and our present.”
Currently receiving Oscar buzz for her supporting role in “Nightmare Alley,” Blanchett previously scored nods for “Carol,” “Elizabeth: The Golden Age,” “I’m Not There,” “Notes on a Scandal,” and “Elizabeth,” and took home statuettes for “Blue Jasmine” and “The Aviator.” Her upcoming slate includes “A Manual for Cleaning Women,” an adaptation of Lucia Berlin’s short story collection of the same name.
The Goya Awards are set to take place February 12. This year’s nominees include Best Actress contender Penélope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”) and Clara Roquet, who is in the running for Best Original Screenplay for “Libertad,” which she also directed.
