About Chinatown DC
Chinatown is a small neighborhood in Downtown Washington DC. Originally, Chinatown DC was located on the south side of Pennsylvania Avenue in the Federal Triangle but was eventually moved to the H Street area.
In the past, the area was home to thousands of Chinese immigrants. Many of them lived in the Wah Luck House apartments at 6th Street NW and H Street NW. The apartment building was designed by Alfred Liu and it featured modern Chinese design motifs. Today, only 361 Chinese residents live here (according to the 2020 census).
Chinatown Community Cultural Center aims to preserve the Chinese community and promote the neighborhood as a wonderful cultural destination. They offer tours and a variety of programs that celebrate Chinese culture and heritage.
Nevertheless, Chinatown is still a vibrant place with great restaurants, bars, shops, and theaters. Also, known brands like Subway and Starbucks display Chinese characters on their storefronts.
