The past few months have had several salmon recalls. Earlier this year, St. James Smokehouse voluntarily recalled 93 cases of their Scotch Reserve Scottish Smoked Salmon packages in 10 states because of a potential contamination with Listeria. Then last month, the FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention started investigating an outbreak of Salmonella linked to raw salmon supplied to restaurants in California and Arizona.
Which salmon was recalled?
The full product name is Giant Private Label Wild Caught Alaskan Sockeye Smoked Salmon, and the refrigerated 4 0z packages are the ones being recalled. The salmon has a cardboard sleeve with a sleeve window—here’s a picture of the salmon from the FDA. Only the Universal Product Code (UPC) of 68826715832 from Lot number R4132 (found on the clear plastic bag that holds the fish) are affected by the recall. The fish was distributed by Giant Food in Maryland, Virginia, Washington D.C., and Delaware.
Why was it recalled?
In a routine regulatory health safety inspection conducted by the Maryland Department of Health, inspectors found the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause serious and fatal infections to young children, older people, and immunocompromised people. Generally healthy people are also known to be affected with other non-deadly but severe symptoms. The FDA is continuing their investigation with the company to find the cause of the problem, but there are no reports of illnesses so far.
What to do if you bought the recalled salmon
If you bought the salmon, the FDA recommends you throw it away or return it to your grocery store for a full refund. You should also sanitize your fridge and any countertops that the fish made contact with. If you have other questions about the recall, you can contact Seven Seas International USA at 1-888-627-5668 between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. ET.
