Natural wonders and inspiring activities await visitors to the Centre of Portugal, the Azores and beyond

From tours of award-winning vineyards to stays in historic castles, there are all kinds of upscale experiences to cater to visitors who are looking to make the most of their stay in Portugal.

In the Centre of Portugal region, guests can experience the quaint traditional Schist Villages in the mountains, where inhabitants pursue a relaxed pace of life amid the natural beauty of the Beira area.

Visitors keen to enjoy a slower pace of travel can take a train across the Tagus River, while eco-conscious travellers should head to Castelo Novo, a village that has committed to 100% sustainable transport, with a fleet of electric vehicles available to hire for visitors to use, free of charge, if they book online or at the tourist office.

The Centre of Portugal is also known for its gastronomy, with honey, cherries and fish among the best ingredients here.

Azores attractions

Another underrated area to explore is the Azores. This autonomous region of Portugal in the Atlantic Ocean is known for its dramatic landscapes, traditional fishing villages, verdant hills and exotic wildlife.

The islands are also home to stunning golf courses, with jaw-dropping hiking and diving excursions also available. There’s the option to take a catamaran out into the ocean. The waters are teeming with biodiversity and guests will have the chance to spot some of the archipelago’s marine creatures.

And if health and wellbeing is top of the agenda, head for the islands’ hot springs, which have been attracting people since the 16th century.

Three of the best luxury experiences in the Azores

1. Take a trip out to sea on a whale‑watching tour and look out for several species, including pilot and mink, as well as bottlenose and Atlantic spotted dolphins.

2. Visit natural springs in Furnas on São Miguel. These iron water pools are perfect for rejuvenating any aching muscles and joints, and can be experienced either out in the wild (follow the ‘Furnas smell’) or at dedicated thermal baths sites.

3. Sample the Azores’ food and drink, which is fuelled by its volcanic soil. Consider booking a private dinner hosted by a local chef or take part in a gastronomic walking tour to get a taste of what the region can offer.
