Karen Gillan to Topline Lisa Steen’s Multigenerational Comedy “Late Bloomers”
Gillan in "Dual"Karen Gillan can currently be seen on the big screen, where she’s reprising her role as Nebula in “Thor: Love & Thunder.” She’ll take a break from the Marvel universe with “Late Bloomers,” a multigenerational coming-of-age comedy that marks Lisa Steen’s feature debut. Deadline broke the news that Gillan, whose other recent credits include “The Bubble” and “Dual,” toplines the pic, which has wrapped production in Brooklyn.
From We’re Doin’ Great and Park Pictures, “Late Bloomers” tells the story of Louise (Gillan), “an aimless millennial who drunkenly breaks her hip, landing her in physical therapy. There, she makes an elderly Polish BFF (Margaret Sophie Stein) who speaks no English. And it’s this unlikely friendship that gives her the courage to face what she’s been running from all along: Her mother’s early-onset Alzheimer’s.” Talia Balsam plays Louise’s mother.
The pic is penned by Anna Greenfield and “loosely based on her experience living in Brooklyn in her 20s.”
Gillan made her feature directorial debut with “The Party’s Just Beginning,” a dark comedy that she also wrote and starred in. Her other big screen credits include “Jumanji” and “The Big Short.”
