Katy Perry christens Norwegian Prima in Reykjavik
Vessel is first of six ships in NCL’s Prima class
Pop star Katy Perry christened Norwegian Cruise Line’s Norwegian Prima in a star-studded ceremony in Reykjavik on Saturday, as the vessel became the first major cruise ship to be officially named in the Icelandic capital.
Norwegian Prima is the first of six ships in the line’s Prima class, and was due to sail to Cork, Portland, Le Havre and Amsterdam following the ceremony.
Harry Sommer, NCL chief executive, said Prima’s christening was “the pinnacle of everything our 55-year history has been preparing us for”.
The christening, which was held in the ship’s Prima Theater, saw a performance from Icelandic popstar Dadi Freyr, the country’s Eurovision entrant in 2020 and 2021.
The show also honoured the crew on board the ship, and paid homage to Knut Kloster, the founder of Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings who died in 2020.
Perry then performed some of her greatest hits to round off the event.
Prima’s inaugural voyages will commence from September 3 and will be to Northern Europe, from the Netherlands, Denmark and England. In October and November, Prima will sail to the Caribbean from New York, Galveston and Miami, before moving to its homeports, Port Canaveral, Florida and Galveston for its 2023 and 2024 seasons.
