Cannon: Late Night with Seth Meyers/YouTube“Blockers” helmer Kay Cannon is teaming up with best-selling author Taylor Jenkins Reid on a new original comedy for Sister. Variety reports that Cannon will direct the pic, with Jenkins Reid co-writing the script alongside Ashley Rodger.
Set to kick off shooting next year, the untitled project “centers around four childhood pals who get a drunken voicemail from their former best friend on the eve of her wedding day — confessing that she thinks she’s making a mistake — and set out to stop her wedding and rekindle the bond they once shared.”
Asked what advice she’d give first-time women directors, Cannon told The Hollywood Reporter, “My advice is to be firm with your ideas, to have a vision and know exactly what you want. At the same time, you really have to be open to collaborating. I think when you collaborate, especially in comedy, it’s just the best idea needs to win, and so I felt that stance [worked] — that you have to be like, be firm, be firm, make decisions, also listen to everyone around you.”
Besides “Blockers,” Cannon is best known for penning all three installments of the “Pitch Perfect” franchise. The trilogy grossed nearly $600 million worldwide. She most recently wrote and directed 2021’s live-action “Cinderella” led by Camila Cabello. “30 Rock” and “New Girl” are among the three-time Emmy nominee’s TV credits,
Jenkins Reid’s novels include “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” and “Daisy Janes and the Six.” The former is being adapted into a film by Netflix and the latter is being adapted into a limited series by Amazon.
