NKT Day 2024 – fulfilling our Guru’s heart wish

The first Saturday of April each year is NKT Day, when we celebrate the founding of the NKT by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche in 1991. With the New Kadampa Tradition – International Kadampa Buddhist Union, Venerable Geshe-la has created a global community of Dharma centers that are united by a common goal, practice the same path and follow the same internal guidance. This tradition is Venerable Geshe-la’s heart.

Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche appeared in this world because people need Buddhadharma to enjoy happy and meaningful lives. Through the force of Venerable Geshe-la’s vision and energy, the Kadam Dharma of Atisha and Je Tsongkhapa, freshly presented by him for the modern age, is spreading throughout the world. Out of his great compassion, and believing that everyone, everywhere, can transform their lives, and therefore their world, through applying Buddha’s teachings to everyday life, he has established a truly international Buddhist tradition that benefits all living beings equally, regardless of nationality, culture, gender or age.

Through his immeasurable kindness, profound wisdom and practical skill, Venerable Geshe-la has provided every condition necessary for the flourishing of modern Kadampa Buddhism: establishing centers, training qualified Teachers to teach according to their own language and culture, and encouraging the translating of Dharma books and sadhanas. In these, and in so many other ways, he has ensured that people everywhere, now and in future generations, have the opportunity to understand easily the meaning of Buddha’s teachings, and, by integrating this into their daily lives, find true inner peace and happiness.
