The best railway stations in Europe for the smoothest passenger experience

Europe’s best railway stations for convenience and reliability have been revealed.

A list of the best-performing railway stations across the continent has been published by the advocacy group Consumer Choice Centre, which shows how the 60 busiest stations in Europe fare amid rising passenger numbers.

The list factored in accessibility, ticketing, amenities, connectivity, competition and mobility options when assessing how well the stations operate, but gave special attention to wait times and the percentage of delayed trains.

The research found that Zürich HB in Switzerland was the most reliable train station in Europe, with only four per cent of its trains delayed and an average wait time of 1.2 minutes.

While Zurich’s station reflects the Swiss standard for reliability with its national punctuality rate of 94 per cent, French stations also ranked highly in this year's list.

Gare du Nord has reduced its average waiting time from 3.77 minutes to 0.4 minutes and delayed trains from 20 per cent to five per cent, earning it second place, while Gare Montparnasse and Gare Saint-Lazare also ranked highly and fifth and seventh respectively.

Germany’s stations, meanwhile, fell down the rankings, with no station appearing in the top ten and 15 found in the bottom 30 places.

Berlin Central Station currently has an average wait time of 20 minutes, Dortmund records the highest delay rate on the index at 73 per cent, and Hamburg has the longest average wait time of almost 25 minutes.

Over in Poland, the researchers were impressed with Kraków Główny and Poznań Główny, where passengers can choose from multiple train connections, shops and a large amount of amenities that make the passenger experience smoother.

For example, Kraków Główny, comprising 11 platforms, has lifts and escalators, accessible ramps and toilets, integrated bus and tram services, written and verbal station announcements, app integration, free wifi, ride-hailing options, and a first-class lounge – all of which boosted its ranking on the list despite 28 per cent of its trains being delayed.

Similarly, London St Pancras performed well on the list, ranking ninth, for its international Eurostar services, 35 shops, 28 restaurants and accessibility features, but was let down by its delayed train percentage of almost 26.

The research found that Europeans wait an average of eight minutes for a train, but the rate of trains delayed across the continent is a high 29 per cent.
