Well-being is multi-dimensional.
We eat well and exercise to take care of our physical body, and we read and meditate to improve our mental health.
But what about our energetic and spiritual well-being?
When we neglect our spiritual health, we can suffer physical disease, mental ailments, and unstable emotions. Without nourishing our energetic bodies, we can unknowingly undo all the hard work we do for our bodies and minds.
So how do we take care of our energetic bodies?

Through chakra cleansing.
In this article, we’ll explain how you can heal and cleanse your energy centers and how to know if your chakras are blocked.
Let’s dive in.
Why Is Chakra Cleansing Important?
Chakra healing breaks up blocked or stagnated energy while transmuting negative energy into positive.
Each center can have too little or too much energy (be underactive or overactive). Both circumstances can lead to various mental, emotional, and physical symptoms.
Chakra cleansing gets the energy flowing better and rebalances each center, either increasing or reducing the energy present, as needed. As we start with the base chakra and move upwards, we can achieve total alignment and balance, reaching our optimum well-being in all dimensions.
How To Clear Your Chakras
Chakra healing is easier than you would imagine. Some things you already practice, like meditation and yoga, can be highly beneficial when practiced with intention. Here are the six most common ways to cleanse your chakras.
Chakra Balancing Meditation
Meditation is one of the oldest methods for clearing chakras. However, you must use specific visualization techniques to work with the chakra system in meditation.
With meditation, you can send energy to all seven main chakras, freeing any blockages or stagnation throughout the system. Or, you can focus solely on healing one chakra, using color visualization, mantra chanting, envisioning that charka’s qualities, etc.
The typical way I guide clients through a chakra cleansing meditation is like this (using the root chakra as an example):
After finding a comfortable position and taking a deep breath, bring your awareness to the base of the spine, where the root chakra is located. Feel your body safely and securely connected to the earth and feel the earth’s energy drawing your body down into union. Envision a red ball of energy spinning and pulsating on an axis at the base of the spine. Feel the warmth of this vibrant red energy. As you look into this red light, see the qualities of the root chakra: safety, security, protection, stability, and groundedness. Envision these qualities dispersing from the red light and filling your entire body, traveling down to your feet, out to your fingers, and up to the top of the head. Once you feel infused with root chakras energy, bring your attention back to the base of the spine. Feel your connection to the earth, return to your breath, and take three deep cleansing breaths to finish the meditation.Check out my 20-minute chakra tune-up guided meditation to balance all seven chakras.
Yoga Poses
As the chakra theory comes from the yogic tradition, it’s no surprise that practicing specific yoga postures can help to cleanse and balance the chakras.
So which yoga poses are best for the chakras? Well, it depends on the chakra you are working on.
Root chakra – Grounding asanas like Tadasana (mountain pose), Warrior 1 & 2, tree pose, Malasana (squat pose), and chair pose. Sacral chakra – Hip opening poses like pigeon, lizard, and Baddha Konasana (butterfly). Solar plexus chakra – Any asana that contracts or compresses the core, such as boat pose, plank pose, seated twists, reclined twists, and bow pose. Heart chakra – Chest opening poses like dancers, bridge, upward facing dog, humble warrior, and melting heart pose (puppy pose). Throat chakra – Any asana that stretches or compresses the throat region, such as camel pose, fish pose, plow pose, and shoulder stand. Third eye chakra – Introspective postures like hero or lotus pose or those that add slight pressure to the forehead like child’s pose or standing forward fold. Crown chakra – Corpse pose (Savasana), headstand, and rabbit pose.If working on one or two chakras, combine the suggested asanas to create a short sequence. Or, if you want a complete chakra tune-up, take one or two poses for each chakra, and sequence them together, starting from the root to the crown.
Sound Healing
Sound healing is well known to have powerful healing qualities for the physical body and our mental and emotional health. Sound meditation is also commonly used for people with a blocked chakra, as the sound vibrations can break up the blockage and increase energy flow in that center.
Each chakra is associated with a specific vibrational frequency, so if you’re working on one chakra in particular, you’ll need to do a sound healing session with music tuned to the correct frequency.
Root chakra frequency: 396 Hz Sacral chakra frequency: 417 Hz Solar plexus chakra frequency: 528 Hz Heart chakra frequency: 639 Hz Throat chakra frequency: 741 Hz Third eye chakra frequency: 852 Hz Crown chakra frequency: 963 HzFor best results, I recommend booking a private session with a qualified sound healer (even in-person or online). If you can do an online session, they will hold the singing bowls over the chakra you need to balance, directing the vibrational energy there.
You can also find many pre-recorded chakra sound healing meditations on Youtube and meditation apps.
Crystals
Like sound, crystals carry healing vibrations, and specific stones share the same vibrational frequency as the chakras. Thus, holding a crystal during your meditation practice, wearing one around your neck, or keeping one on your bedside table could help to keep the energy flowing freely.

However, cleaning and charging stones is essential before working with them. You can cleanse an energy center by soaking it in salt water or placing it outside in the moonlight. To charge it and set an intention, hold it in your hands as you bring to mind what you want it to help with.
I recommend consulting a reiki practitioner if this is your first time working with crystals. Many incorporate crystals into their Reiki practice by holding the stones over the energy centers to direct the energy flow.
Root chakra stones: Hematite, Fire Agate, Red Jasper, Tourmaline. Sacral chakra stones: Orange Calcite, Amber, Citrine. Solar plexus chakra stones: Citrine, Tiger Eye, Yellow Aventurine, Pyrite. Essential Oils
All essential oils have specific healing qualities, some of which match the qualities of a particular chakra. In addition, essential oils are easy to work with; you can put a couple of drops on your wrists to inhale as you meditate or practice yoga, diffuse them in your home, or dab them onto your pillow.
Root chakra: Cedarwood, Patchouli, Myrrh, Frankincense, Pine, Vetvier, Red Spruce Sacral chakra: Orange, Sandalwood, Frankincense, Clary sage, Cinnamon. Solar plexus chakra: Sandalwood, Ginger, Atlas Cedarwood, Ylang Ylang, Lemongrass, Helichrysum. Heart chakra: Rose, Geranium, Ylang Ylang, Lavender. Throat chakra: Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Chamomile, Peppermint, Spearmint. Brow chakra: Lavender, Patchouli, Cedarwood, Clary Sage, Frankincense, Pine, Rosemary, Spruce Crown chakra: Frankincense, Galbanum, Gurjum, Helichrysum, Jasmine. If you’re diffusing essential oils, I recommend this Crystal Energy & Ultrasonic Aromatherapy Diffuser. It combines chakra aromatherapy and crystal therapy, boosting the chakra healing powers.
Another fab option is the Aromafume 7 Chakra Natural Mists Set, which has a mist spray for each chakra infused with the appropriate essential oil. They smell so good I replaced my perfumes and body sprays with these.
Color Therapy
Finally, each chakra is associated with a specific color. This is based on the color therapy philosophy that each spectrum on the rainbow has a unique vibrational frequency and, thus, can evoke certain qualities.
It is believed wearing the color of a particular chakra can help to cleanse it, along with eating lots of foods of that color.
Root chakra: Red Sacral chakra: Orange Solar plexus chakra: Yellow Heart chakra: Green Throat chakra: Light blue Third eye chakra: Indigo Crown chakra: Purple or whiteHowever, it’s important to note that you should do this with intention. For example, when eating dark blue foods like blueberries, envision any blocked energy clearing in your brow chakra. Or, visualize the qualities of the Manipura chakra when eating yellow foods like pineapple or mango.
How To Determine Which Chakra Needs Cleansing
What if you’re unsure which energy centers are out of balance? Here’s a brief guide to what each of the seven chakras represents and the symptoms of a blocked chakra.
Root chakra (Muladhara)
The root chakra (Muladhara in Sanskrit) governs all our core needs for survival. It is responsible for makings us feel safe and secure within ourselves and our external environment. When open, we feel grounded, centered, connected to our bodies, and in touch with nature.
Your first chakra may need some balancing if you constantly feel unrooted like you don’t belong anywhere. In addition, you may have excess fear around your safety or ability to survive and feel the world is out to get you.
Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana)
The sacral chakra (Svadhisthana in Sanskrit) is responsible for our sensuality, creativity, sexual energy, emotional regulation, financial stability, and ability to feel pleasure and have fun. When clear, we feel passionate, purposeful, and emotionally stable. Our creative juices are flowing, and we have a good sex drive.
If you struggle to do creative pursuits, have a low sex drive, lack purpose or direction, or have a lot of financial anxiety, cleansing this chakra could help.
Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)
The solar plexus chakra (Manipura in Sanskrit) is the hub of our personal power, self-esteem, confidence, courage, inner strength, and resilience. When this chakra is clear, we feel strongly connected to our purpose and greatly desire to reach our goals. As a result, we radiate positive energy and are not afraid to take action to create our dream life.
However, you may need some solar plexus chakra cleansing if you struggle with self-esteem, confidence, or courage. Other signs of a blocked solar plexus are a lack of motivation, discipline, and feeling uninspired.
Heart Chakra (Anahata)
The heart chakra (Anahata in Sanskrit) governs our ability to give and receive love and compassion. When clear, we enjoy fulfilling relationships with others and ourselves, we can experience deep compassion and understanding, and we feel generally joyful and grateful.
If the heart chakra is blocked, we may judge or criticize others or others. We may struggle to show our feelings to others and receive love in return. We may keep others at arm’s distance rather than welcoming them into our hearts and lives.
Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)
The throat chakra (Vishuddha in Sanskrit) is our communication center. It controls how well we express our ideas and beliefs and determines our listening skills. If our throat chakra is clear, we can speak our truth and express our creativity, desires, and thoughts clearly and precisely.
If our throat chakra is blocked, we may struggle to voice our concerns, speak up in groups, and reveal our true feelings. We may stumble to find the right words, speak over others, or get embarrassed when speaking.
Third Eye Chakra (Ajna)
The third eye chakra (Ajna in Sanskrit) is our center of vision, intuition, and imagination. It allows us to connect with our inner wisdom and find guidance from ourselves and the universe. It also promotes reflection, mental clarity and focus, strategic thinking, and creativity.
If you have a blocked third eye chakra, you may have the following:
An overactive or cloudy mind Suffer from chronic headaches or migraines Have difficulty focusing Struggle to make decisionsCrown Chakra (Sahasrara)
The crown chakra (Sahasrara in Sanskrit) represents spiritual connection, attaining higher consciousness, and reaching the state of enlightenment. It is believed that you must cleanse all lower chakras before this one can open; thus, it can be the most difficult to clear.
The highest chakra is also linked with self-mastery and freedom from the mind and ego. When the crown chakra is open, you feel fully connected spiritually and experience deep joy and inner peace.
Your crown chakra may need cleansing if you struggle to feel connected to other people, animals, or nature or see yourself as superior to everyone else. A blocked crown chakra can also cause narrow-minded thinking and questioning of spirituality.
Final Thoughts On Chakra Cleansing
Spiritual well-being is an integral part of our experience in the human body. So along with nourishing ourselves, physically and mentally, we must also do the work on an energetic level. Luckily, with chakra cleansing, we can reach our optimum state of health, happiness, and freedom.
