Beautiful post.
But I had to comment, that twice when we’ve been fortunate enough to visit Europe, my husband joyfully ordered steak tartare and BOTH times he was incredibly sick for much of both trips. I remember going to the Rodin museum in Paris and I have this picture of him in front of the Gates of Hell sculpture, and he looks so miserable and I’m pretty sure immediately after I took the photo he ran off to find the nearest bathroom.
His dear French friend from college was letting us stay in his tiny one-bedroom Paris apartment while the friend stayed at his parents house. But one night, after having a nice meal and going rather late, his friend stayed on the couch. Except that the bathroom had walls that didn’t go all the way up tot he ceiling. So every trip my husband took to the bathroom we could hear and … smell EVERYTHING. It was one of the most cringe-worthy memories I have!
On a second trip to Belgium and his second go-round with steak tartare which was still torturing him on the flight home, the flight attendant actually came to find me and ask if everything was all right my husband was spending so much of the flight in the airplane bathroom! I was embarrassed, but she was very relieved that it was just a dumb American tourist who ate raw European beef and not a security threat!
