Trailer Watch: Céline Sciamma Is Back with Mother-Daughter Story “Petite Maman”

"Petite Maman"

Céline Sciamma is back with another film that’s sure to break your heart. She’s following up 2019’s “Portrait of a Lady on Fire,” a tragic romance about an artist and the woman she’s commissioned to paint a portrait of, with “Petite Maman,” an exploration of grief, memory, and the bond between a child and her mother.

A trailer for the magical realist tale introduces us to Nelly (Joséphine Sanz), an eight-year-old girl mourning the loss of her grandmother. Along with her parents, she travels to her mother’s childhood home to clean out its contents. “You never talk about when you were a child,” she tells her mom (Nina Meurisse).

Luckily for Nelly, she doesn’t need to rely on her mother’s own account of her childhood — she manages to go back in time and actually meet her mother as a child (Gabrielle Sanz). She befriends her and they explore the nearby woods together.

“Petite Maman” hits theaters April 22. Sciamma penned its script. “Girlhood” and “Tomboy” are among her other credits.
