“I always thought I wanted this kind of life, but I never imagined any of this,” says Iman Vellani in a new trailer for “Ms. Marvel.” The Canadian actress is making her on-screen debut in the Disney+ series about Kamala Khan, AKA Ms. Marvel, a 16-year-old living in New Jersey who idolizes superheroes. The project marks Marvel Studios’ first with an on-screen Muslim hero.
When she’s not having her Avengers clothes mocked and hearing her name mispronounced, Kamala is playing video games, writing fan fiction, and daydreaming about what it’s be like to be as powerful as someone like Captain Marvel. But with questions about her future mounting, the highschooler is starting to believe that her naysayers may be right — that she does spend “too much time in fantasyland.” She admits, “It’s not really the Brown girls from Jersey City who save the world. That’s a fantasy.” But something happens to Kamala — something that makes her fantasy a reality. She’s a superhero.
“Ms. Marvel” launches on Disney+ June 8. Its directors include Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (“A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness”) and Meera Menon (“Equity”). Bisha K. Ali (“Loki) serves as head writer.
