“Every woman is not built for the great responsibility of being a first lady,” says Regina Hall in a new trailer for “Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul.” Written and directed by Adamma Ebo, the satire tells the story of Trinitie Childs (Hall), the first lady of a Southern Baptist megachurch who is seemingly the brains behind the operation. “He’s just so raw,” she says of her husband, Pastor Lee-Curtis (Sterling K. Brown). “He needs someone to harness it all.”

When Lee-Curtis is accused of misconduct and forced to temporarily close his church, he and Trinitie vow to “get to the other side” of the scandal and make “the ultimate comeback.” Trinitie tells her husband, “We need you back on that pulpit so you can get me back on that stage.”

“Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul” marks Ebo’s feature debut.

Asked what drew her to the story, the filmmaker told us, “I was raised Southern Baptist during the height of booming megachurch culture, and I kept finding myself within this tug of war between what was being preached and what actions were being shown. The complex emotions that came from my desire to both leave it all behind and cling to the aspects of organized religion that I find beautiful and inspiring continued to sit right in the pit of my stomach, so I decided to get it out the best way I know how — write.”

Hall’s recent credits include “Nine Perfect Strangers,” “Master,” and “Black Friday.”

“Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul” hits theaters and Peacock September 2.
