Trailer Watch: Sally Rooney Adaptation “Conversations With Friends” Examines Two Messy Love Triangles
"Conversations with Friends"“Normal People” scribe Alice Birch is back with another Sally Rooney adaptation for Hulu. A new trailer for “Conversations with Friends” introduces us to Frances (newcomer Alison Oliver) and Bobbi (Sasha Lane, “American Honey”), best friends, ex-girlfriends, and college students who find themselves drawn to an older married couple who are prominent in the arts scene.
“I thought that maybe I was incapable of love. That there was something wrong with me. That isn’t true,” says Frances. But the object of her affection is Nick (Joe Alwyn, “The Favourite”), the husband of her new friend Melissa (Jemima Kirke, “Girls”). “I don’t want to hurt your marriage,” she tells him. The 21-year-old is also warned by his wife that “Nick likes to tell people what they want to hear.” Nevertheless, she enters into an affair with him, but the outcome isn’t what she hoped. “I’m in love with you and you obviously don’t feel the same,” she tells him.
Meanwhile, Bobbi is falling for Melissa. “I kissed Melissa. We’ve been flirting and it just happened,” she confesses.
“Conversations with Friends” premieres May 15.
