Trailer Watch: Time-Traveling Tweens Save the World with Ali Wong’s Help in “Paper Girls”

"Paper Girls": Amazon Studios

Ali Wong is shocked to discover a group of pre-teen girls have broken into her home — and even more shocked to discover their true identities — in a trailer for “Paper Girls.” “This is a psychotic break,” her character says. “A 12-year-old version of yourself broke into your house with her punk friends.”

Based on the award-winning graphic novel series of the same name, the Prime Video show tells the story of four young friends (Camryn Jones, Riley Lai Nelet, Sofia Rosinsky, Fina Strazza) who find themselves in a time war after they travel from 1988 to 2019. The girls come face-to-face with their adult selves as they attempt to find a way back into the past, a quest made more difficult by the fact that they’ve committed a capital offense by traveling out of time and are now targets. Besides saving themselves, it’s also up to them to save the world. The fate of humanity rests on their shoulders.

“Paper Girls” launches July 29. Mairzee Almas (“Shadow and Bone”), Georgi Banks-Davies (“I Hate Suzie”), Destiny Ekaragha (“The End of the F***ing World”), and Karen Gaviola (“Lucifer”) served as directors on the sci-fi’s first season.
