United Airlines has completed the first installation of Starlink satellite Wi-Fi on one of its regional aircraft and is on track to complete installation across its regional fleet by the end of the year, the carrier said.

Starting in May, United plans to install the Starlink equipment on more than 40 aircraft per month. Installing the equipment takes only about eight hours, not counting the time to remove previous Wi-Fi equipment, which is about 10 times faster than installing other Wi-Fi technologies, according to United. The full process, which includes de-installation, re-installation and testing, takes an aircraft out of service four about four days, compared with more than 10 days for other Wi-Fi installations.

That "will enable us to hit our goal of more than 300 regional aircraft installations before the end of this year," United VP of digital technology Grant Milstead said in a statement.

United ultimately plans to have Starlink Wi-Fi across its entire fleet, and access will be free for MileagePlus loyalty members.
