Amazon has spent years chasing the major water cooler hit that would justify the existence of Prime Video, and yet despite some strong showings (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, The Boys, The Wheel of Time), it has never managed to launch its own pop culture-dominating Stranger Things-level hit.
When does Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power premiere?
If anything is going to be the next Game of Thrones, though, might as well bet on the series set in the world of a film franchise that has grossed some $6 billion. Amazon sure did, investing around $1 billion into Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Given it is premiering Sept. 2, in the wake of Game of Thrones’ prequel House of the Dragon’s debut on HBO, the battlefield certainly seems set. Will one show leave the other a smoking (or arrow-filled) corpse? Will they peacefully co-exist? Or will everyone quickly tire of these two franchise followups to disappointing prior installments? We’ll see.
Also coming to Prime Video this month: Goodnight Mommy, an English-language remake of a supremely creepy 2014 Austrian film of the same name about twin boys whose mother comes back from the hospital to recover from an accident, wrapped in bandages—except the boys are convinced she’s not their real mother. This version stars Naomi Watts as the mom and is directed by Brand New Cherry Flavor executive producer Matt Sobel; the trailer suggests it might actually be an effective (if unnecessary) new version of the twisty story.
