Your Ground Cumin May Have Been Recalled for Salmonella

The food distributor Lipari Foods has issued a voluntary recall after a specific lot of Lipari Branded Ground Cumin Tubs was found to potentially have been contaminated with Salmonella and was distributed to 16 states. Salmonella can cause serious or fatal infections to young children, elderly people, or those with a weak immune system, while healthier people usually suffer from fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

Which states are affected by the cumin recall?

The following states are the ones where the recalled cumin has been distributed to retail stores: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Which cumin is recalled?

The packaging is a generic clear plastic container that says “ground cumin” and “Distributed by Lipari Foods” with a white label. The six ounce tub has lot code “220914601,” best by date “09/2024,” and UPC “094776212620” on the bottom of the container. As of this writing, there have been no reported illnesses in connection with the recall.

The company found out about the Salmonella after the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services tested a sample of the cumin and found traces in it. They then alerted the FDA and the The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, who then communicated it to the food distributer company.
