Lion’s Roar Foundation is hiring an Online Learning Specialist

by | October 13, 2022

The Lion’s Roar Foundation is seeking a full-time Online Learning Specialist with strong editorial skills and in-depth knowledge of Buddhism and mindfulness, and teachers and communities related to these, to further develop our library of online learning courses, summits, and other digital events, and to build upon the success of our podcast. (See learn.lionsroar.com to view our current online learning platform and catalog.)

Lion’s Roar is a non-profit media organization that produces Buddhist content across a variety of platforms to meet the needs of a wide range of audiences. We are looking for someone who shares our commitment to deep practice and study of the dharma and to the development of sanghas and organizations that embody the best of Buddhist and human values. For those who share our mission, this position offers a unique opportunity to play an important role in contributing to the future of Buddhism.

Candidates should have experience in online learning development (or an area/milieu with transferable skills). You should also have a deep understanding of Buddhist practice as well as wide knowledge of Buddhist and Buddhism-adjacent traditions, communities, and leaders. While your practice may be rooted in any tradition, you have solid knowledge of, appreciation for, and curiosity about other Buddhist schools, communities, and organizations. You should also have a strong grasp of the interests and challenges most relevant to Buddhist practitioners, and the ability to establish relationships with teachers, scholars, and organizations across the Buddhist spectrum.

What you’ll do and what we’re looking for:

You will be responsible for developing online learning opportunities—virtual summits, single- and multi-teacher classes, professional development opportunities, and more—that fulfill the Lion’s Roar mission of providing Buddhist wisdom and education according to our audience’s needs.

Editorial functions will include: online learning program conception and development—often in direct collaboration with leading Buddhist teachers; directing recording sessions; contributing to creative briefs, marketing materials, and supporting editorial (newsletters, articles, bonus materials for online event participants). This is a role that requires organization and constant collaboration, managing a team and its projects.

Online Learning at Lion’s Roar is a vital and vibrant area of activity, one that we believe has great potential to be of benefit. It is fast-paced, with the potential for multiple simultaneous projects at various stages of development, and this role requires both big-picture thinking, and detail-oriented collaboration with stakeholders across departments and from other organizations. It is also a significant source of audience development and funding for the foundation, and as such requires a willingness to actively embrace budgeting, measurement of goals, reporting, sales and marketing processes, and so on.

Above all else, this role requires the ability to help create and present transformative teachings and practices, tell compelling and inspiring stories, and use audio and video media to convey the dharma. Your creative approaches to developing a clear arc of content from raw materials that may represent multiple voices and points of view, or be compiled from new or previously recorded presentations, will be key to your success. Familiarity with LMS platforms and project management software, and general understanding of digital production and post-production workflows, will be assets. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated experience in developing programming for professional audiences, including securing continuing education credits.

The editor will work in partnership with other Lion’s Roar Foundation editors, and especially others on our AV team, under the direction of the editor-in-chief and the publisher. This is a full-time position and may be done remotely or from our offices in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Remuneration will be commensurate with experience.
