Hardwicke's "Lords of Dogtown"We’re already eagerly awaiting Season 2 of “Betty,” Crystal Moselle’s “Skate Kitchen” spinoff about an all-female skating crew, on HBO, and now it looks as though we’ll have another female-led series set in the skateboarding scene to look forward to. IMDb TV has a gender-swapped ensemble drama based on “Lords of Dogtown” in development, Deadline reports.
Inspired by Catherine Hardwicke’s 2005 film of the same name, “Lords of Dogtown” is being penned by “Queen Sugar” alumna Kat Candler. The series depicts the “1970s skateboarding scene in Southern California,” and is “centered around a hell-raising teenage girl growing up in the foster care system. She falls in with a crowd of skaters who idolize the famed Zephyr Skateboard Team,” the source details.
Hardwicke and Candler are among the project’s exec producers.
The source doesn’t specify whether Candler, who made her feature directorial debut with 2014 Sundance pic “Hellion,” will also helm the project. Her TV directing credits include “Dirty John,” “13 Reasons Why,” and “Queen Sugar.” She also wrote for the latter. She’s re-teaming with “Queen Sugar” creator Ava DuVernay for an untitled series about a workers rights activist.
