Léa Seydoux has signed on to topline Audrey Diwan’s third feature, “Emmanuelle.” The erotically-charged story will mark Diwan’s English-language debut and her follow-up to “Happening,” an abortion drama that took home the Golden Lion at last year’s edition of Venice Film Festival. According to Deadline, the project is being shopped to buyers at the Cannes Market this week.
Inspired by Emmanuelle Arsan’s controversial novel “Emmanuelle,” the adaptation is being penned by Diwan and Rebecca Zlotowski (“Planetarium”). It follows a “young woman’s sexual journey from the arms of her husband to intimate encounters with the wives of his business associates, to further explorations wherein the philosophical and aesthetic facets of eroticism are expounded — and enacted — to the fullest degree,” the source teases.
Seydoux and her “Blue Is the Warmest Color” co-star Adèle Exarchopoulos made history as the first actresses to be awarded Cannes’ Palme d’Or when they won alongside the film’s director. She’s premiering two films at the fest this year, “Crimes of the Future” and “One Fine Morning.” The latter, from Mia Hansen-Løve, centers on a woman struggling to find proper care for her father, who is suffering from a neurodegenerative disease.
Diwan made her feature debut with 2019’s “Losing It.” “Happening” is in theaters now.
