Microsoft has announced a second round of layoffs involving hundreds of jobs, less than a month after it axed 6,000 employees globally on May 13.
According to a notice filed in Washington state and reviewed by Bloomberg, over 300 employees were informed on Monday (June 2) that their positions had been eliminated.
It remains unclear which specific job functions were impacted or whether any of the affected positions are based in Singapore.
“We continue to implement organisational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace,” said a Microsoft spokesperson.
The layoffs come in light of the artificial intelligence (AI) boom, which has disrupted the tech labour market, as companies shift their focus toward AI-related roles and leverage the technology to cut costs.
Microsoft is one of many big tech companies that have praised the efficiency of AI-assisted coding tools in accelerating software development.
Back in April, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella stated that AI now writes as much as 30% of the code for certain projects within the company. As such, software engineers bore the brunt of the previous layoffs.
