Nicole Riegel’s KiKi Layne-Starrer “Dandelion” Lands at IFC Films

Layne in "The Old Guard"

IFC Films has secured worldwide rights to Nicole Riegel’s sophomore feature, “Dandelion,” a romantic drama led by “Moonlight’s” KiKi Layne. Deadine broke the news.

Slated for theatrical release next year, the film tells the story of Dandelion (Layne), “a struggling but determined Cincinnati singer-songwriter in a downward spiral. She reluctantly takes a last-ditch-effort gig at a motorcycle rally in South Dakota where she meets Casey, a guitarist who walked away from his dream long ago. As Dandelion joins Casey’s eclectic and nomadic group of struggling musicians, the kindred spirits make music together and strike up an intoxicating whirlwind romance that moves Dandelion from an obsession with results and a narrow view of success to a deeper appreciation of her artistic journey and the discovery of a voice that is authentically her own,” the source details.

“I’m very excited to bring forth a story about the resilience of the human spirit and magic of serendipity taking center stage,” said Layne, who is among “Dandelion’s” exec producers. “Music is an integral part of my life, so being able to merge the two worlds with my passion of acting is a dream come true, and I’m thrilled to be in partnership with IFC Films.”

Riegel, who is also producing “Dandelion,” described her partnership with Layne as “rewarding” and promised that the starring role “showcases her authenticity and gorgeous music abilities.”

IFC Films released 2020’s “Holler,” Riegel’s feature debut, an Indie Spirit-nominated coming-of-age drama about a teenage girl who joins a dangerous scrap metal crew in the hopes of paying for her college education. “When I was a high school senior, I had a meeting with my guidance counselor. She told me that I would probably never go to college, and it was one of the most discouraging things that I think can happen to a young person,” Riegel explained in our exclusive featurette of the film. The writer-director emphasized, “I want multiple generations to see this film and leave the film wanting to encourage girls to dream and have more.”

“Don’t Worry Darling” and “The Old Guard” are among Layne’s more recent credits.
