“Nanny” director Nikyatu Jusu is moving from the horrors of the mind to the horrors of the flesh with her upcoming “Night of the Living Dead” sequel. MGM Studios is currently in final negotiations for the worldwide rights to the latest addition of the zombie film franchise. Deadline broke the news.

The original “Night of the Living Dead” is credited with popularizing the zombie horror subgenre. The 1968 indie film that has launched a franchise of six films thus far. The Jusu-helmed sequel will be the seventh installment. 

“The Walking Dead” writer LaToya Morgan penned the script for the film, which will be released theatrically. Its plot details are still under wraps.

Jusu’s vampire short “Suicide by Sunlight,” which premiered at Sundance 2019, is getting a feature adaptation. Written by Jusu and Fredrica Bailey (“See You Yesterday”), the pic will center on day-walking Black vampires whose melanin protects them from the sun.

Earlier this year, Jusu made history with her feature debut, “Nanny:” in addition to becoming the second Black woman to receive Sundance’s Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic, her film was also the first horror title to win the category.

Set to launch on Prime Video today, December 16, “Nanny” stars Alice Diop as a Senegalese immigrant working as a nanny in New York City. Her life begins to unravel when she starts experiencing violent nightmares and hallucinations.
