Quinta Brunson’s “Abbott Elementary” Wins Big at TCA Awards

Quinta Brunson’s mockumentary about a group of intrepid teachers at an underfunded Philadelphia elementary school was the big winner at this weekend’s Television Critics Association Awards, sweeping a total of four prizes: Individual Achievement In Comedy for creator-star Brunson, Outstanding Achievement In Comedy, Outstanding New Program, and Program of the Year.
ABC’s critically acclaimed hit is also a major Emmys contender. With nominations for comedy series, lead actress in a comedy series, and writing for a comedy series, Brunson is the first Black woman to receive three nods in the comedy categories in the same year. The 32-year-old is also the youngest Black woman to receive a nomination for lead actress in a comedy series.
“Abbott Elementary” will return for a second season this fall.
Also among this year’s TCA winners are Mandy Moore for “This Is Us” (Individual Achievement In Drama), the gone-too-soon “Baby-Sitters Club” (Outstanding Achievement In Youth Programming), and “I Love Lucy” (Heritage Award).
