Winehouse in "Amy"

Sam Taylor-Johnson is bringing Amy Winehouse’s life story to the big screen. The “Fifty Shades of Grey” filmmaker has been tapped to helm “Back to Black,” a Studiocanal biopic of the Grammy-winning jazz singer. Deadline broke the news.

A documentary tracing Winehouse’s meteoric rise, the abuse she suffered from the media, and her struggles with addiction, was released in 2015. Titled “Amy,” it won an Oscar for best documentary. Winehouse died from alcohol poisoning in 2011. She was 27 years old.

Besides “Back to Black,” Winehouse’s biggest hits included “Rehab” and “You Know I’m No Good.”

Taylor-Johnson most recently directed episodes of the star-studded Prime Video anthology series “Solos” and a 2018 adaptation of James Frey’s “A Million Little Pieces.” Her biggest box office hit, the first installment of the “Fifty Shades of Grey” franchise, took in more than $569 million worldwide. She made her feature debut with 2009’s “Nowhere Boy.”
