Savanah Leaf’s “Earth Mama” will open the 52nd edition of New Directors/New Films (ND/NF). Jointly presented by the Museum of Modern Art and Film at Lincoln Center, the fest will take place March 29-April 9.
“Earth Mama” marks Leaf’s feature debut. Described as a “devastating and evocative portrait of motherhood refracted through the prisms of race and class,” the coming-of-age pic tells the story of a pregnant single mom in the Bay Area.
Other titles set to screen include Manuela Martelli’s “Chile ’76,” the story of a woman asked to help care for a young man her local priest is providing shelter to, and Tia Kouvo’s “Family Time,” a comedy about a Christmas get-together.
“This geographically diverse lineup brings together new directors from all over the world presenting works that make bold and creative statements on everything from identity and family to political repression and postcolonial discourse. The power of cinema to inspire imagination and explore perspectives is evident in the wide range of styles, ideas, and voices in the selection,” said La Frances Hui, Curator, Department of Film, MoMA, and 2023 ND/NF Co-chair.
