SeaDream Yacht Club claims ‘industry first’ with shore power upgrade
Line hails ‘significant milestone in journey to sustainable cruising’
SeaDream Yacht Club has adapted the second ship in its fleet to use shore power connectivity, claiming an “industry first”.
SeaDream I has now been upgraded during a shipyard stay in Lisbon following the upgrade of SeaDream II at the end of last year.
Shore power technology enables docked cruise ships to connect directly to a specially fitted land-based source, allowing them to switch off their engines and operate on electricity sourced from the local electrical grid, reducing emissions and noise while at port.

The line has claimed to be the first luxury cruise line to retrofit its whole fleet with shore power connectivity, in a project that it said cost more than $10 million.
As well as technology upgrades, the vessels also received refreshes to their staterooms, public areas and open deck spaces.
Both ships will sail in the Mediterranean this summer before repositioning to the Caribbean for the winter 2024-25 season.
Executive vice-president Andreas Brynestad said: “This is an important milestone and a significant step in our journey to more sustainable cruising.
“Visiting some of the most beautiful destinations on the planet comes with a responsibility. We are committed to having a positive impact in the communities and destinations we visit.
“Our employees, our guests and our partners are all an important part of our ambition to inspire more sustainable travel.”
