“The Woman King,” “Women Talking,” and “She Said” Among AFI’s Best Films of 2022
"The Woman King"Hot on the heels of being named Best Film of the Year by the African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA), “The Woman King” has scored another honor. Gina Prince-Bythewood’s blockbuster about an all-female army of warriors is among the AFI’s 10 best films of 2022.
Three of 10 films are directed by women this year. Joining “The Woman King” are Sarah Polley’s “Women Talking” and Maria Schrader’s “She Said.” The former tells the story of women in a remote religious community dealing with the aftermath of a series of sexual assaults, and the latter revisits how New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor broke the Harvey Weinstein story and helped galvanize the #MeToo movement.
“AFI Awards shines a light upon excellence in storytelling and the collaborators who bring these stories to the screen,” said AFI president and CEO Bob Gazzale. “This year, more than ever, celebrating the community of artists that realize these dreams is particularly meaningful — as they have lifted our spirits through the most challenging of times and proven the power of this great art form.”
The Institute also named the best television series of 2022, which include “Abbott Elementary,” Quinta Brunson’s ABC sitcom about public school educators. Head over to the Hollywood Reporter to check out all of AFI’s film and TV picks. The AFI will recognize honorees in an awards ceremony January 13.
