Trailer Watch: Zoey Deutch Is Living a Lie in Quinn Shephard’s Social Media Satire “Not Okay”
"Not Okay"Zoey Deutch’s white lie goes nuclear in “Not Okay.” A new trailer for Quinn Shephard’s sophomore feature introduces us to Danni Sanders (Deutch), an unfulfilled photo editor hoping to transition to writing. Insecure about her lack of a social life, both online and IRL, Danni is desperate for attention and validation — so much so that she fakes a trip to Paris to impress her crush (Dylan O’Brien, “Love and Monsters”). Her clout chasing takes an unexpected turn when a string of terrorist attacks in the City of Lights leaves dozens dead and more injured. Danni becomes semi-famous after surviving the attacks. Rather than clarify her whereabouts at the time of the tragedy, she embraces her role as “the girl of the moment.”
“Have you ever wanted to be noticed so badly you didn’t even care what it was for?” Danni asks in the trailer. She warns, “Be careful what you fucking wish for.” Danni’s lie is discovered, transforming her from a hero to a villain.
“Set It Up,” “Zombieland: Double Tap,” and “The Politician” are among Deutch’s credits.
Shephard made her feature directorial debut with 2017’s “Blame,” which she also starred in. Her other acting credits include “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” and “Hostages.”
“Not Okay” hits Hulu July 29. Mia Isaac (“Don’t Make Me Go”) co-stars.
