American to Begin Testing Free Wi-Fi

American Airlines next week will begin a limited-time test of complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi on three mainline routes, the carrier confirmed Friday.

Those routes are between the carrier's hub in Charlotte, N.C., and each Raleigh-Durham, N.C., and Jacksonville, Fla., and between Miami and Chicago, according to an internal memo from new American chief customer officer Heather Garboden

The carrier will use the test to assess customer take rates for inflight Wi-Fi, to evaluate its provider and aircraft capacity, and—"perhaps most important"— to measure the effect on customer satisfaction via Net Promoter Scores, according to the memo.

Through this test, the carrier is "exploring opportunities to build upon our high-speed Wi-Fi offerings to stay competitive in the industry and give our customers what we know they want," according to American.

Delta Air Lines was the first of the three main U.S. carriers to begin to offer free Wi-Fi for SkyMiles members beginning Feb. 1, 2023. United Airlines in September announced a deal with Starlink to provide free Wi-Fi to customers, and in January said it would launch its first aircraft outfitted with satellite Wi-Fi this spring.
