Virgin Atlantic has partnered with electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft manufacturer Joby Aviation to develop air taxi service in the U.K., the companies announced Sunday.
Delta Air Lines, which owns a 49 percent stake in Virgin Atlantic, in October 2022 invested $60 million in Jobyto have the company's air taxis used for home-to-airport transportation. This new partnership builds on that existing agreement to launch air taxi service in the U.S. and U.K., according to the companies.
Current plans include Joby offering short-range trips across the U.K., starting with regional and city connections from Virgin Atlantic's hubs at Heathrow and Manchester airports. Sample journeys could include a 15-minute flight from Manchester Airport to Leeds, or an eight-minute flight from Heathrow to Canary Wharf.
The companies did not offer a projected start date for Joby's U.K. service.
"Joby expects to offer prices that are comparable with existing premium ground ridesharing options at launch," according to the companies.
