Restrictions to be relaxed nationwide if Bali pilot successful

Indonesia hopes to remove quarantine for vaccinated by April

An Indonesian minister has said the country hopes to remove quarantine restrictions for all fully vaccinated visitors by April 1 at the latest.

Luhut Pandjaitan, a minister overseeing the Covid response in the resorts of Java and Bali, told a news conference that the rules would be relaxed across the country if a pilot in Bali went well.

Under the pilot, which began on Monday (March 7), fully vaccinated tourists now can skip a mandatory three-day quarantine, though they need to remain on the island for four days.

Bali had opened to foreign tourists last October, but three-day quarantine and other rules remained in place, limiting demand.

Bali received 6.2 million visitors in 2019 and tourism normally makes up 50% of its economy, Reuters reports.
