A producer on “Barbara Lee: Speaking Truth to Power,” the winner of this year’s NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Documentary, is set to make her directorial debut. Joslyn Rose Lyons will follow up the portrait of the Democratic congresswoman with “Shadowbox,” described as a “sweeping fable, employing magical realism to chronicle a city threatened by gentrification and at risk of losing its dreams.” She also penned its script.
Hill Harper (“CSI:NY”) and J. Alphonse Nicholson (“P-Valley”) are set to star and will exec produce, per Deadline.
Rose Lyons, Harper, and Nicholson previously collaborated on “Butterfly Boxing,” a short that’s in post-production.
“I’m honored to have Hill Harper and J. Alphonse Nicholson star and executive produce my directorial debut film,” said Rose Lyons. “They are amazing talent, and have been an inspiration on my journey, so to be able to officially work with them is an honor.”
Rose Lyons has directed and produced content for Starz, Lionsgate, Warner Bros, BET, and OWN, among other outlets. She’s directed dozens of music videos, including Mali Music’s “Beautiful.”
