Just one in 10 UK adults confident of ‘normal’ holiday abroad

Poll finds minority booked, majority at all ages lack confidence

Just one in 10 UK adults confident of ‘normal’ holiday abroad

Just one in 10 UK adults is confident of having a ‘normal’ summer holiday abroad this year, according to a YouGov poll of travel intentions.

The latest YouGov poll also found just 8% of respondents have an overseas holiday booked despite the number of bookings rolled over to this summer from the spring or from last year.

YouGov polled more than 4,250 adults last week and found three-quarters (74%) were “not confident” of having a ‘normal’ summer holiday abroad. The poll did not specify what ‘normal’ meant.

It found 11% were confident of having an overseas holiday and 15% unsure.

Adults aged under 25 were most confident, with one in six (17%) anticipating a normal holiday. But there was little variation by age among those aged 25 and over, with 75% or more in all age groups not confident.

Londoners were somewhat more confident than average, with 15% expecting a holiday abroad to be normal. There was almost no variation in the rest of England and Wales, but adults in Scotland showed the greatest lack of confidence (80%).

Asked whether they had already booked a summer holiday, 3% of respondents had booked both a UK holiday and a holiday abroad and a further 5% had booked solely an overseas holiday.

One in five (20%) had a domestic holiday booked, leaving 71% with no booking for the summer either in the UK or abroad.

Rates of overseas bookings showed little variation by age, but Londoners were most likely to have booked an overseas holiday (8%) and least like to have booked a domestic break (14%). However, Londoners also showed the highest rate with no booking at all (75%).

YouGov conducted the survey of 4,257 UK adults on May 12.
