Another year is about to begin, and you’ve set your resolution: declutter your home and simplify your life.
Good choice. But if you’ve made this resolution before and found yourself overwhelmed, know this: victory is always perfection. Sometimes It’s just about progress. And this year, we believe you can make real, lasting change.
Decluttering is more than a task; it’s a mindset shift. And that is important for you to remember.
Here are practical steps to help you clear out the clutter—and keep it out for good.
1. Start with a Clear Vision
Why do you want to declutter? Is it to create a peaceful home, reduce stress, or make space for new opportunities? Write down your “why” and keep it visible. This vision will anchor you when motivation wanes.
2. Focus on One Area at a Time
Trying to declutter your entire home at once can feel impossible. Instead, choose one small area to tackle first: a kitchen drawer, a bathroom shelf, or a bedside table. Small victories build momentum.
3. Follow the “Four Box Method”
Grab four boxes and label them: “Keep,” “Donate,” “Trash,” and “Relocate.” As you go through items, make quick decisions and place each item in the appropriate box. This method keeps you organized and focused.
4. Declutter by Category, Not Room
When possible, declutter by category (clothes, books, kitchen gadgets) rather than by room. Seeing all your items in one category helps you realize how much you own and makes it easier to decide what stays.
5. Set a Time Limit
Decluttering doesn’t have to take all day. Set a timer for 20 or 30 minutes. Short, focused sessions prevent burnout and make the process feel manageable.
6. Ask Yourself the Right Questions
When deciding whether to keep something, ask: “Do I use this? Does it bring me joy? Would I buy this again today?” If the answer is no, it may be time to let it go. Another helpful question to ask is “What would I use if I didn’t have it?“
7. Be Kind to Yourself
Decluttering can be emotional. Letting go of items tied to memories or “someday” plans is hard. Give yourself grace and focus on the freedom and peace you’re creating.
8. Create “No Clutter Zones”
Designate specific areas of your home (like your kitchen counters or coffee table) as “no clutter zones.” Commit to keeping these spaces clear to maintain a sense of order.
9. Make Decluttering a Habit
Decluttering isn’t a one-time event. Spend 5-10 minutes each day tidying up and letting go of things you no longer need. Consistency keeps clutter from creeping back.
10. Involve Your Family
Decluttering isn’t just your responsibility. Involve your family or household members. Teach your kids to let go of toys they no longer use, or work together to keep shared spaces clutter-free.
11. Let Go of “Just in Case” Items
We often hold onto things “just in case” we might need them. But most of the time, those items only add clutter. Trust that you can live without them and let them go.
12. Celebrate Your Progress
Every item you let go of is a step toward freedom. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small. Take before-and-after photos to see how far you’ve come.
13. Try the Uncluttered Program
I’m going to add a 13th idea. Uncluttered is the 12-week online course designed by Joshua Becker of Becoming Minimalist that has helped over 80,000 people over the last ten years. It is the only decluttering course we recommend. And this January 2025 is the last time Joshua will be offering it. The registration period is open January 01 – January 12 and you can find more information here.
This New Year, make decluttering more than just a resolution—make it a lifestyle. By starting small, staying consistent, and focusing on your “why,” you can create a home and life in 2025 that reflects your true values. Here’s to a simpler, freer, and more intentional year ahead!
