Nobody who grew up with Wizards of Waverly Place expected the Disney Channel to kill off one of the most beloved characters. One original cast member’s fate, in particular, quickly made the rounds on social media after the season 3 finale of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place, and it was none other than Gregg Sulkin‘s Mason Greyback: Alex Russo’s (Selena Gomez) former werewolf boyfriend and high school sweetheart. So, what exactly happened to him, and did their relationship ever really end?

Hollywood Life breaks down Mason’s fate in Wizards of Waverly Place and how the sequel series ended below. (Warning: spoilers are ahead on the ending of Wizards Beyond Waverly Place)

What Happened to Mason Greyback in Wizards of Waverly Place?

At the end of the original magical series, which wrapped in 2012, Alex and Mason got back together despite the odds against them. Werewolves and wizards weren’t allowed to be together, but the couple concluded the original Disney Channel series on a positive note.

However, it looks like Mason and Alex eventually went their separate ways, though it’s still unclear how or why. She later had her daughter, Billie, which Wizards Beyond Waverly Place revealed.

During the sequel series’ season 3 finale, Alex goes missing inside a portal and finds herself living in a supposed fairytale life with her childhood best friend, Harper Finkle (Jennifer Stone), and her “boyfriend” is apparently supposed to propose to her.

Mason is revealed to be the boyfriend in question, who appears at Alex’s front door to reunite with her. But once Alex tells him to pop the big question, Mason explains the real reason for his visit.

Did Mason Die in Wizards of Waverly Place?

Yes. Unfortunately, Mason died sometime between the events of Wizards of Waverly Place and the sequel series, but it’s unclear how he passed. The character’s grim fate is revealed when he and Alex sit down to talk.

“I can’t propose to you. And you know why,” Alex tells Alex. “Think about it. This isn’t how it’s supposed to be. Why can’t I propose to you?”

“Because you’re dead,” Alex replies, which jolts her back to reality. After worrying that she’s now dead, Mason assures her that she isn’t and that there is still time. “When you went through the rift, you ended up somewhere in between,” he explains. “And I came here to help you get back.”

“You have a whole other life, Alex. You got married. You have a beautiful daughter. And she needs you,” Mason says. “That’s the life that you’re meant to live. You have to go back.”

Breaking fans’ hearts even more, Mason concludes the conversation by telling Alex, “I’ll always love you, Alex Russo. And I’ll always be watching over you.”

Who Is Billie’s Dad in Wizards Beyond Waverly Place?

Billie’s dad is Damien Penwulf, a wizard and the son of Lord Morsus. Damien disappeared to make sure Alex and Billie would be safe from Morsus’ power.
