Podcast-derived true-life crime dramas? Hulu’s got ‘em in March, as the streaming service launches a pair of star-backed miniseries exploring the sordid deeds of two women, one of them a convicted fraud and the other a convicted killer, and both of the shows based on popular podcasts.
The more high-profile of the two is certainly The Dropout (March 3), winner of the race to dramatize the headline grabbing, scandal-making story of the fall of Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes, who had a great idea about the future of medicine and
who didn’t let its impossibility stop her from getting investors to give her a lot of money to launch a company. This seven-episode miniseries version is based on the podcast of the same name, stars Amanda Seyfried as the baritone-voiced femme fatale, and should not be confused with the Jennifer Lawrence-starring big-screen version currently in development.
Then there’s The Thing About Pam (March 11), in which Renée Zellweger plays Pam Hupp, a woman who was accused of using one murder to potentially cover up another (and who is currently serving a life sentence in prison for her crimes). It’s the kind of sordid, twisty story that also proved irresistible to the true-crime podcast crowd. (If Hulu’s true crime podcast-centric comedy Only Murders in the Building hadn’t already been released, it would seem even more meta.)
Other highlights for the month: The Girl From Plainville (March 29) starring Elle Fanning, another true-crime series starring a name actress, though this one isn’t based on a podcast; the long-awaited third season premiere of Donald Glover’s Atlanta (March 25); and the streaming launch of a few critically doted-upon 2021 films, including Paul Verhoeven’s Benedetta (March 4) and the buzzy but weirdly titled Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn (March 17), a Romanian import about a schoolteacher whose sex tape leaks on the internet. And then there’s American Song Contest (March 22), the domestic answer to Eurovision that I’m not sure anyone was asking for.
